With the opening of the Maizuru Naval Base in 1901, various developments were undertaken, including the construction of the naval port and district facilities, water supply systems to the naval port, railways, roads, official residences, and the creation of new urban areas. It was through these efforts that a major naval base and modern urban infrastructure was established.
The eight brick warehouse buildings of Maizuru Brick Park were constructed between 1902 and 1918 as storage facilities for military supplies, coinciding with the establishment of the naval base. The opening of the railway spur line to the naval port in 1904 allowed rail tracks to be laid inside the warehouses, enabling goods to be transported by freight cars.
These are valuable examples of brick buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods that have survived as a group, and were designated as National Important Cultural Properties in 2008.
